A 504 Gateway Timeout error means that your internet server did not receive a timely reply from a neighbouring server downstream when it attempted to send you a request for one of your requested web pages.
Simply put, your servers are not communicating with each other quickly enough. This scenario occurs quite frequently. If you have a high-traffic website, you should not have to deal with this issue for extended periods of time.
There are a number of different reasons why your servers may be experiencing a 504 Gateway Timeout error code.
Servers Experiencing High Levels of Traffic
The most common cause is that both of your internet servers are experiencing high levels of traffic.
When a website receives too much traffic, the amount of ‘hops’ it takes to send each request to the database is increased. If the number of hops is too high, the request will take longer than normal.
Trying to Access It At The Same Time
If enough users trying to access a website are trying to access it at the same time, the website may go ‘down’. In a popularly used term, ‘down’ refers to the point at which your website becomes inaccessible.
There are also some specific reasons why your system may be experiencing a Timeout error code.
Infected With A Virus
First of all, if your system has been infected with a virus that has a timer on it; then it will keep repeating the same errors. Secondly, your internet connection may be suffering from a problem.
How To Fix Errors
Use Network Card
One popularly used method of repairing this is to clean out any of the errors/banditches that are on your network card. If there are any errors in your hardware, then these problems will cause your system to keep repeating the same status codes.
Analyse Type of Server Error
In order to resolve the problem, you need to first find out whether your system has any of the following common server errors. The first of these being the’504 Gateway Timeout error’ mentioned above. The other type of server error that this can cause is called the ‘5xx errors’ on your system.
This is a common error that affects a lot of different parts of your system including the likes of the ‘net scan’ tool and also the ‘ping’. This problem can also cause many different errors on your hard drive and in your internet browser as well.
The problem which causes the’504 Gateway Timeout error’ is actually down to the way in which Google Chrome handles internet traffic. When you use this particular application, it’s going to have a large cache of different files that it will be able to use whenever it needs to.
Check Internet Connection
However, the problem is that whenever this huge cache of files try to open up, your browser will be unable to proceed with it. This error is normally caused by your internet connection not being able to process the huge number of files that it needs to run.
To fix this, you need to be able to resolve the various issues which are causing Cloudflare to run slowly.
Use ‘Content Delivery Network’ or CDN
The biggest issue that is preventing your system from being able to run correctly is actually down to the way that your system actually uses the ‘Content Delivery Network’ or CDN.
This is essentially the means by which all of the websites that you visit across the Internet are all kept on servers which are close to each other.
Although the network itself is fast, it also has a lot of problems with it such as slow down, connection time delays and even connection drops. If the problem with the Content Delivery Network is the reason that your Cloudflare browser is having problems.
then you need to look to the bottom of your connection and see if there are any issues there. If this is not the problem, then you need to then use a good program to clean out any of the damaged parts on your server.
If your computer is allowing the Content Delivery Network to send you information to many sites, but not all of them, then there could be some problems with the settings on your virtualhost.
You should first try changing the settings on your proxyman site, then if this does not work, then you should look to see whether you have any other issues on your system which are causing your gateway timer to run slowly.
Change CDPN Settings
One of the ways that this can be caused is if there are any scripts on your website that are blocking the CDPN settings. In order to resolve this, you will need to be able to remove any of these scripts from your website and then change the settings so that they work as they should.
Check IP Address
Some other common reasons for the 504 Gateway Timeout errors are when you have shared hosts, but this is less common than it used to be. When the error comes up, there are two things to look for, either the physical address that is being used or the IP address.
The actual IP address of the server might have changed as a result of the shared hosts and this should be corrected as soon as possible.
However, if the physical address has not been changed, then the problem is with the software of the server. To make sure this is not the case, then you should try a fresh installation of the operating system of your machine and see if this makes any difference. Most times, the problem is with the software and not the physical part of the system.
